Spotlight on Transition

The GFCC Transition program is designed for students who have completed a 4 year old preschool program and are age appropriate for Kindergarten. Our Transition students are delaying Kindergarten for a variety of reasons:
  • Parents choose to delay their starting school for personal reasons.
  • Early birthdays may result in lesser developed social, gross, and fine motor skills.
  • Physical or emotional development is not where the parent feels it should be for their age.
  • Child may experience anxiety about school. They may feel overwhelmed because they cannot do the work assigned or feel that they cannot do it to their own expectations. This may cause "melt downs".
  • Child lacks confidence. They may be shy or may not feel comfortable in a group setting away from the safety of their home.
  • Child may have a short attention span or cannot sit through a circle time without being extraordinarily wiggly or unfocused.
  • Child may not be interested in academic school work or holding a pencil for any length of time may be frustrating.
  • Child has difficulty listening to and following a series of directions.
Teachers of GFCC Transition children recognize that these children, while very intelligent, need the time for their bodies to mature to the level of their brain development.

Teachers do not teach Kindergarten material, but teach a more challenging curriculum than the four year old preschool class.

GFCC Transition provides:

  • A more challenging academic program that includes:
    1. Second Step - a Wake Co. adopted program that teaches, through discussion and role playing, how express oneself in a group setting.
    2. Literary Awareness Program - introduces phonetic, phonemic, literary, and written word awareness.
    3. Handwriting Without Tears - a program developed by an Occupational Therapist that teaches manuscript alphabet using a less frustrating method.
    4. A challenging critical thinking, math, and science curriculum.
  • A smaller teacher to student ratio.
  • Teachers who are in tune with your child's developmental needs.
  • Positive guidance in all areas of development.
  • Students have several opportunities to experience group gatherings in different areas of the building and off site locations. They have opportunities to listen to other adult presenters.
  • A music teacher who introduces students to listening to directions through music, different styles of music, music of other cultures, musical instruments, and group performances.
  • A creative movement education teacher who guides them in group activities that strengthen their large muscle development, balance, and coordination through music.
  • Encouragement in the development of independence and self assurance.
